A Beggar asked a rich Bishop for Charity, demanding a pound.
— ‘A Pound to a beggar! That would be extravagant.’
— ‘A Shilling then!’
— ‘Oh, it’s still too much!’
— ‘A twopence then or your Benediction.’
— ‘Of course, I will give you my Benediction.’
— ‘I don’t want it, for if it were worth a twopence, you wouldn’t give it me.’
THOUGHTS
Men fear thought as they fear
nothing else on earth
more than ruin
more even than death
Thought is subversive and revolutionary
destructive and terrible
thought is merciless to privilege
established institutions
and comfortable habit
Thought looks into the pit of hell
and is not afraid
Thought is great and swift
and free, the light of the world
and the chief glory of man.
